Glass of milk, a good source of calcium

The main symptoms of calcium deficiency are muscle cramps and spasms, tingling or numbness around the mouth and in the fingers, and tiredness. A long-term shortage of calcium in the diet usually causes no symptoms at first, but slowly weakens the bones (osteopenia and osteoporosis). Low blood calcium is most often caused by vitamin D deficiency, so the two are usually treated together. Most adults need about 1,000 mg of calcium a day from food and supplements combined.

Key points

  • Bone loss from low calcium is silent until a fracture happens.
  • Calcium needs vitamin D to be absorbed. Many tablets combine the two.
  • Take no more than about 500 mg of calcium at a time; split larger daily doses.
  • Calcium carbonate works best with food. It can cause constipation and wind.
  • Keep calcium 2–4 hours apart from iron, thyroid medicine and some antibiotics.

Signs and symptoms of calcium deficiency

Short-term (low blood calcium)Long-term (low intake over years)
Muscle cramps and spasms, especially in the legs and handsThinning bones (osteopenia, osteoporosis)
Tingling or numbness around the lips, fingers and toesFractures from minor falls
Tiredness and weaknessLoss of height or a stooped back
Severe cases: confusion, seizures, abnormal heart rhythmIn children: poor bone growth

Muscle cramps have many causes, including dehydration, magnesium deficiency and some medicines. A blood test (calcium, vitamin D and sometimes parathyroid hormone) shows the real cause.

How much calcium do you need?

GroupCalcium per day
Children 4–8 years1,000 mg

Osnate-D tablet uses

Osnate-D combines ossein mineral complex, a bone-derived source of calcium and phosphorus, with vitamin D. Doctors commonly prescribe it for:

  • Calcium and vitamin D deficiency
  • Bone health in pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • Osteopenia and osteoporosis, alongside other treatment
  • Recovery after fractures

Urdu mein: Osnate-D haddiyon ki mazbooti ke liye calcium aur vitamin D ki kami, hamal aur doodh pilane ke dauran, aur haddi toot jaane ke baad recovery mein istemal hoti hai. Doctor ki batayi hui khurak lein.

How to take calcium tablets

  1. Calcium carbonate (most tablets): take with food for best absorption.
  2. Split doses: the body absorbs up to about 500 mg at a time.
  3. Separate from other medicines: keep 2–4 hours apart from iron tablets, levothyroxine (thyroid), and antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin or doxycycline.
  4. Drink enough water to reduce constipation.

Can you take too much calcium?

Yes. For adults, total calcium from food and supplements shouldn’t go above 2,500 mg a day (2,000 mg over age 50). Too much can cause constipation and kidney stones, and very high levels can affect the heart and kidneys. People with kidney stones or kidney disease should only take calcium on medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

What are the first signs of calcium deficiency?

Muscle cramps and tingling around the mouth and fingers are common early signs of low blood calcium. Bone loss from low intake has no early symptoms.

Which is the best calcium tablet in Pakistan?

It depends on your needs. Calcium with vitamin D (such as Qalsium-D, Calcium-P or Osnate-D) suits most people. Your doctor may prefer a specific product for osteoporosis or pregnancy.

What is Osnate-D used for?

Osnate-D is used for calcium and vitamin D deficiency, bone health in pregnancy and breastfeeding, osteoporosis support and recovery after fractures.

Should I take calcium in the morning or at night?

Either works. Calcium carbonate should be taken with a meal. If you take two doses, split them between meals.

Can calcium tablets cause constipation?

Yes, especially calcium carbonate. Drinking more water, eating fibre and splitting the dose usually helps.

Can I take calcium and iron together?

No. Calcium reduces iron absorption, so take them at least 2 hours apart.
