The medicine for uric acid depends on whether you have gout. During a gout attack, anti-inflammatory painkillers, colchicine or steroids calm the pain and swelling. To prevent attacks, doctors prescribe medicines that lower uric acid long term, mainly allopurinol (Zyloric) or febuxostat (Adenuric, Gouric). High uric acid on a blood test without any symptoms usually doesn’t need medicine; diet, weight loss and water are the first steps. The classic gout symptom is a sudden, very painful, hot, red, swollen joint, often the big toe, usually starting at night.

Key points

  • High uric acid with no symptoms is common and often doesn’t need tablets.
  • A gout attack needs prompt treatment; it usually settles within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Allopurinol and febuxostat are long-term prescription medicines. Don’t stop them during an attack.
  • Limit organ meat, red meat, some seafood, sugary drinks and alcohol; drink plenty of water.
  • Painkillers such as diclofenac are not suitable for everyone, especially with kidney or stomach problems.

High uric acid symptoms and gout

Uric acid is a waste product made when the body breaks down purines, found in some foods and in our own cells. When levels stay high, crystals can form in the joints and cause gout.

  • Gout attack: sudden, severe pain in one joint, most often the big toe but also the ankle, knee, wrist or fingers. The joint is hot, red, swollen and too tender to touch, even by a bedsheet.
  • Tophi: after years of high levels, small chalky lumps under the skin, on the ears, fingers or elbows.
  • Kidney stones: uric acid stones can cause severe side or back pain.

Many people have high uric acid without ever getting gout. Joint pains in several joints at once are more often caused by other forms of arthritis. A doctor should confirm gout.

Normal uric acid levels

GroupTypical lab range
MenAbout 3.4–7.0 mg/dL
WomenAbout 2.4–6.0 mg/dL
Target for people treated for goutUsually below 6 mg/dL

Ranges vary slightly between labs. Uric acid can read normal during an attack, so timing matters.

Foods to avoid with high uric acid

Limit or avoidBetter choices
Organ meats: kaleji (liver), gurda (kidney), maghaz (brain)Low-fat milk, dahi and lassi
Large portions of red meat (beef, mutton) and payeChicken or eggs in moderate amounts
Some seafood: prawns, sardines, anchoviesVegetables, including spinach and peas (these are fine)
Sugary drinks, packaged juices and syrups high in fructoseWater: aim for urine that stays pale
Alcohol, especially beerWhole grains, fruit, cherries

Daal and plant proteins don’t raise gout risk the way meat does, despite common belief.

Home remedies for uric acid that help

  • Lose weight gradually if you’re overweight. Crash dieting can trigger attacks.
  • Drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day unless your doctor has limited fluids.
  • Rest and raise the joint during an attack, and apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth for 20 minutes.
  • Cherries have some evidence of reducing attacks. Lemon water and apple cider vinegar have little evidence.
  • Review your medicines: some diuretics and low-dose aspirin can raise uric acid. Don’t stop them yourself; ask your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best medicine for uric acid?

Allopurinol is usually the first choice for lowering uric acid long term in people with gout. Febuxostat is an alternative. Both need a prescription and regular blood tests.

Can high uric acid be cured permanently?

Gout can be controlled very well by keeping uric acid below target with medicine and lifestyle changes, but most people need to continue treatment long term.

Should I take allopurinol during a gout attack?

If you’re already taking it, keep taking it. If you haven’t started, your doctor will decide when to begin, usually once the attack is settling, often with cover to prevent flare-ups.

Is daal bad for uric acid?

Plant proteins such as daal and beans don’t raise gout risk the way red meat and organ meat do, and can be eaten in normal amounts.

Can drinking water lower uric acid?

Staying well hydrated helps the kidneys remove uric acid and lowers the risk of stones, but water alone rarely brings high levels down enough.

Is joint pain always a sign of high uric acid?

No. Most joint pain is caused by other conditions, such as osteoarthritis. A doctor should confirm gout before uric acid medicine is started.
