Digital blood pressure monitor with arm cuff

Medically reviewed by Arhum Nadeem, Pharm-D (8 years’ experience as a pharmacist) · Last reviewed: 17 October 2026

The BP machine price in Pakistan ranges from about Rs 1,100 for a basic digital monitor to Rs 5,700 or more for a branded upper-arm model in October 2026. A manual (aneroid) set with a dial costs about Rs 3,100. For home use, a validated automatic upper-arm monitor with the right cuff size is the best choice: it is accurate, easy to use and doesn’t need a stethoscope.

Key points

  • Upper-arm monitors are more reliable than wrist monitors for most people.
  • The cuff must fit your arm. A cuff that is too small gives falsely high readings.
  • Choose a model that has been clinically validated for accuracy. Check it on a validated-device list before you buy.
  • At home, a reading of 135/85 or higher usually means high blood pressure.
  • Take two readings a minute apart, morning and evening, and keep a record for your doctor.

Upper-arm or wrist monitor?

Choose an upper-arm monitor if you can. Wrist monitors are more sensitive to position: the reading changes if your wrist isn’t held exactly at heart level. A wrist monitor is a reasonable option only if an arm cuff doesn’t fit or is too painful, and your doctor agrees.

How to choose an accurate BP machine

  1. Check it is validated. Many monitors sold online have never been tested for accuracy. Before buying, search the exact model name on an independent validated-device list such as STRIDE BP (stridebp.org).
  2. Get the right cuff size. Measure around the middle of your upper arm. Most standard cuffs fit arms of about 22–32 cm, and a large cuff is needed above that. Check the range printed on the cuff.
  3. Power. With load-shedding, a monitor that works on batteries as well as an adapter is more practical.
  4. Memory and averaging. Storing readings with date and time, or averaging several readings, makes your record more useful.
  5. Warranty. Keep the receipt and warranty card, and check where you can get it repaired or recalibrated.

How to measure your blood pressure correctly at home

  1. Avoid tea, coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes before.
  2. Empty your bladder, then sit quietly for 5 minutes with your back supported and feet flat on the floor.
  3. Rest your arm on a table so the cuff is at heart level. Put the cuff on bare skin, about 2 cm above the elbow.
  4. Don’t talk during the reading.
  5. Take 2 readings, 1 minute apart, in the morning and evening. Write them all down, or use the memory.

Blood pressure chart: what your reading means

Reading (mmHg)What it usually means
Below 90/60Low. Usually fine if you feel well; see a doctor if you feel dizzy or faint.
Up to 120/80Healthy range for most adults
120/80 to 134/84 (at home)Above ideal. Lifestyle changes help.
135/85 or higher at home (140/90 or higher at a clinic)High blood pressure is likely. See your doctor.
180/120 or higherVery high. Rest 5 minutes and recheck; get urgent help if it stays this high or you have symptoms.

High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms, so regular checks are the only way to know. People of South Asian background have a higher risk, according to the NHS.
