The main symptoms of calcium deficiency are muscle cramps and spasms, tingling or numbness around the mouth and in the fingers, and tiredness. A long-term shortage of calcium in the diet usually causes no symptoms at first, but slowly weakens the bones (osteopenia and osteoporosis). Low blood calcium is most often caused by vitamin D deficiency, so the two are usually treated together. Most adults need about 1,000 mg of calcium a day from food and supplements combined.
Key points
| Short-term (low blood calcium) | Long-term (low intake over years) |
|---|---|
| Muscle cramps and spasms, especially in the legs and hands | Thinning bones (osteopenia, osteoporosis) |
| Tingling or numbness around the lips, fingers and toes | Fractures from minor falls |
| Tiredness and weakness | Loss of height or a stooped back |
| Severe cases: confusion, seizures, abnormal heart rhythm | In children: poor bone growth |
Muscle cramps have many causes, including dehydration, magnesium deficiency and some medicines. A blood test (calcium, vitamin D and sometimes parathyroid hormone) shows the real cause.
| Group | Calcium per day |
|---|---|
| Children 4–8 years | 1,000 mg |
| Children 9–18 years | 1,300 mg |
| Adults 19–50, men 51–70 | 1,000 mg |
| Women over 50, men over 70 | 1,200 mg |
| Pregnancy and breastfeeding (adults) | 1,000 mg |
A glass of milk gives about 300 mg and a cup of yogurt about 300–400 mg. If you eat 2 to 3 servings of dairy a day, you may need little or no supplement.

Yes. For adults, total calcium from food and supplements shouldn’t go above 2,500 mg a day (2,000 mg over age 50). Too much can cause constipation and kidney stones, and very high levels can affect the heart and kidneys. People with kidney stones or kidney disease should only take calcium on medical advice.

It depends on your needs. Calcium with vitamin D (such as Qalsium-D, Calcium-P or Osnate-D) suits most people. Your doctor may prefer a specific product for osteoporosis or pregnancy.
Osnate-D is used for calcium and vitamin D deficiency, bone health in pregnancy and breastfeeding, osteoporosis support and recovery after fractures.
Either works. Calcium carbonate should be taken with a meal. If you take two doses, split them between meals.
Yes, especially calcium carbonate. Drinking more water, eating fibre and splitting the dose usually helps.
