The most common early pregnancy symptoms are a missed period, nausea (with or without vomiting), tender breasts, unusual tiredness and needing to pass urine more often. Some women also notice light spotting around the time their period is due. These signs usually appear around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy (counted from the first day of your last period), but not every woman has them. A home pregnancy test is most reliable from the first day of a missed period.
Key points
| Sign | What to expect |
|---|---|
| 1. Missed period | Usually the first sign women notice |
| 2. Light spotting | A small amount of bleeding or brown discharge around when your period is due (implantation bleeding). Much lighter than a period. |
| 3. Nausea or vomiting | “Morning sickness” can happen at any time of day |
| 4. Tiredness | Feeling unusually exhausted after normal activities |
| 5. Tender, swollen breasts | Similar to before a period, but often stronger |
| 6. Passing urine more often | Without pain or burning. Pain or burning suggests a UTI. |
| 7. Constipation | Pregnancy hormones slow the gut |
| 8. More vaginal discharge | Thin and mild-smelling, without itching or soreness |
| 9. Metallic taste | A strange taste in the mouth |
| 10. Sensitivity to smells | Cooking or perfume smells may cause nausea |
| 11. Food cravings or dislikes | New cravings, or losing interest in foods you usually like |
| 12. Mood changes | Feeling emotional or irritable |
Sore breasts, tiredness, cramps and mood changes happen both before a period and in early pregnancy. Signs that point more towards pregnancy are a period that doesn’t arrive, nausea, a metallic taste, a strong sense of smell and needing to pass urine more often. Spotting that is very light and brief is more typical of implantation than of a period.

Most women notice symptoms around 4 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, counted from the first day of the last period. Some notice nothing until later.
Some women notice tender breasts, tiredness or light spotting a few days before their period is due, but these are easily confused with normal period signs.
Very accurate when used correctly from the first day of a missed period. Testing earlier can give a false negative because hCG levels are still low.
Light pink or brown spotting that lasts a few hours to a couple of days, much lighter than a normal period.
Paracetamol (Panadol) at the normal label dose is generally considered the safest painkiller in pregnancy. Use the lowest dose for the shortest time and ask your doctor if you need it often.
Nausea is common and normal, but having no nausea is also normal. Severe vomiting that stops you keeping fluids down needs medical care.
