The main medicine for UTI (urinary tract infection) is a short course of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor, with paracetamol for pain and plenty of fluids. Typical symptoms are pain or burning when passing urine, needing to go often and urgently, cloudy or bloody urine and lower tummy pain. Mild bladder infections sometimes clear on their own within a few days, but fever, back pain or shivering can mean the infection has reached the kidneys, which needs urgent treatment.
Key points
| Bladder infection (cystitis) | Kidney infection: urgent |
|---|---|
| Pain or burning when peeing | High temperature, shivering |
| Needing to pee often, urgently or at night | Pain in the back or side, under the ribs |
| Cloudy, strong-smelling or bloody urine | Feeling sick or vomiting |
| Pain low in the tummy | Confusion or drowsiness (especially in older people) |
Dark, strong-smelling urine on its own often just means you need to drink more water.
A doctor chooses the antibiotic based on your symptoms, pregnancy status, allergies and, ideally, a urine culture. Courses for an uncomplicated bladder infection in women are usually short, often 3 to 7 days depending on the medicine. Take the full course even if you feel better. Divine Medicines supplies antibiotics only against a valid prescription.
Some evidence shows cranberry products may lower the chance of repeat bladder infections in women who get them often. They don’t ease symptoms or cure an active infection. Avoid cranberry if you take warfarin, and check with your doctor in pregnancy.
| Product | Form | Price (Oct 2026) |

UTIs in pregnancy can harm both mother and baby if untreated, and some antibiotics aren’t safe in pregnancy. Pregnant women with any urinary symptoms should see a doctor promptly and only take antibiotics prescribed for them. Doctors also check urine routinely in pregnancy, because infection can be present without symptoms.
If you get 2 UTIs in 6 months or 3 in a year, see a doctor. You may need a urine culture, an ultrasound, a sugar test, or a prevention plan. Repeated self-treatment with antibiotics bought without a prescription often leads to resistant infections that are harder to treat.

Antibiotics prescribed by a doctor are the treatment that cures a bacterial UTI. Paracetamol helps the pain, and fluids help flush the bladder.
Mild bladder infections in otherwise healthy women sometimes clear within a few days. If symptoms are severe, last more than 2 days or include fever or back pain, see a doctor.
Symptoms usually start improving within 1 to 2 days of the right antibiotic. If they don’t, contact your doctor.
No. Cranberry products may help prevent repeat infections in some women, but they don’t treat an active infection. Juices also contain a lot of sugar.
Some antibiotics are safe in pregnancy and some are not. Only take the one your doctor prescribes for you.
Common reasons include not drinking enough, holding in urine, sex, menopause, diabetes and incomplete treatment. Recurrent UTIs need a doctor’s review and a urine culture.
