Man holding his stomach in pain

Medically reviewed by Arhum Nadeem, Pharm-D (8 years’ experience as a pharmacist) · Last reviewed: 17 October 2026

The right medicine for stomach pain depends on the type of pain. Cramping or colicky pain is usually eased by an antispasmodic such as drotaverine (No-Spa) or hyoscine (Buscopan). Burning pain or heartburn after meals responds to an antacid or alginate such as Mucaine or Gaviscon. Pain with diarrhoea and vomiting needs fluids and ORS more than painkillers. Avoid ibuprofen, diclofenac and aspirin for stomach pain, because they can irritate the stomach lining. Sudden, severe pain needs a doctor, not a tablet.

Key points

  • Most stomach aches are minor and pass within a few days.
  • Cramps: antispasmodic. Burning: antacid. Gas and bloating: peppermint oil or simple measures. Diarrhoea: ORS.
  • Don’t use painkillers like ibuprofen or diclofenac for stomach pain.
  • Pain low on the right side, a hard tender tummy, vomiting blood or black stools are emergencies.
  • Stomach pain in pregnancy should always be checked by a doctor.

No-Spa tablet uses

No-Spa contains drotaverine, an antispasmodic that relaxes the smooth muscle of the gut, bile ducts, urinary tract and womb. It’s used for cramping pain from gut spasm, kidney or gallstone colic (alongside medical care), and period cramps. It doesn’t reduce acidity or treat infection.

  • Strengths: No-Spa 40 mg (about Rs 235 / 24) and No-Spa Forte 80 mg (about Rs 193 per strip of 10).
  • Side effects: uncommon; can include dizziness, headache, nausea, constipation and a fall in blood pressure.
  • Avoid or ask first: severe liver, kidney or heart problems, and pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Urdu mein: No-Spa (drotaverine) pait ke marorh aur khinchao, gurde ya pitte ki pathri ke dard aur mahwari ke marorh mein aaram deti hai. Yeh tezabiyat ki dawai nahi hai. Khurak doctor ya pharmacist se poochein.

Buscopan Plus: what it contains

Buscopan Plus combines hyoscine butylbromide (an antispasmodic) with paracetamol (a painkiller). Don’t take extra Panadol or other paracetamol products with it. Avoid it if you have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate with difficulty passing urine, or a fast heart rate, unless your doctor agrees.

Home remedies that help a mild stomach ache

  • Sip water or ORS regularly, especially with diarrhoea or vomiting.
  • Use a warm (not hot) water bottle on the tummy for cramps.
  • Eat small, plain meals: khichdi, rice, banana, toast, dahi.
  • Avoid oily, spicy food, fizzy drinks, strong tea and coffee until you feel better.
  • Walk gently to help trapped wind move.

Painkillers to avoid for stomach pain

Ibuprofen (Brufen), diclofenac (Voltral), naproxen, mefenamic acid and aspirin can irritate the stomach lining and worsen gastritis or ulcers. If you need simple pain relief, paracetamol is gentler on the stomach. For more, read Paracetamol vs Ibuprofen: Which One Should You Reach For?.
