The best medicine for muscle pain is usually the gentlest one that works: a painkilling gel such as diclofenac (Dicloran) rubbed on the sore area, plus paracetamol if needed. Anti-inflammatory tablets such as ibuprofen or naproxen (Synflex) help more for sprains and strains, but carry stomach, kidney and heart risks. Use ice in the first 2 to 3 days after an injury and heat for stiff, long-lasting aches. Tonoflex-P contains tramadol, an opioid that needs a prescription. It isn’t a routine muscle pain medicine.
