Description
Description
Sofvasc HCT (5/160/25mg) combines amlodipine 5mg, valsartan 160mg, and hydrochlorothiazide 25mg, offering three-way blood pressure control with a lower amlodipine dose alongside full-strength valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide components. This is typically used for patients who tolerate amlodipine better at the lower dose but still require strong combined blood pressure management from the other two ingredients.
Ingredients
Active ingredients: Amlodipine 5mg, Valsartan 160mg, and Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg. Inactive ingredients typically include microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, and magnesium stearate, though these may vary by batch.
Dosage Form
Supplied as an oral tablet, packaged as 2 strips of 14 tablets (28 tablets total), generally supporting a four-week supply at standard once-daily dosing.
Uses
Used for high blood pressure requiring three-drug combination therapy with a lower amlodipine component. This combination is often chosen for patients who experienced ankle swelling or other amlodipine-related side effects at higher doses but still need comprehensive blood pressure control. This combination is often selected for patients who need the full valsartan and hydrochlorothiazide dose but tolerate amlodipine better at the lower 5mg strength, balancing effective blood pressure control with a reduced risk of amlodipine-related ankle swelling.
How to use
Take one tablet by mouth once daily, at a consistent time, with or without food. Swallow whole with water. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless close to the next scheduled dose, in which case skip the missed dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, increased urination, fatigue, and mild ankle swelling, generally somewhat less pronounced than with the 10mg amlodipine combinations. Electrolyte changes are possible due to the diuretic component, and periodic blood tests may be recommended. Facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness require immediate medical attention. As with other hydrochlorothiazide-containing combinations, periodic blood tests to check sodium and potassium levels are generally recommended, particularly during the early months of treatment.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, and generally avoided during breastfeeding. Speak with your doctor about safer alternatives if pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
