Description
Sofvasc-HCT (10/160/12.5mg) combines amlodipine 10mg and valsartan 160mg with a gentler 12.5mg dose of hydrochlorothiazide, used for patients who need strong amlodipine and valsartan dosing but benefit from a lower diuretic component, often to minimize electrolyte-related side effects while still achieving comprehensive blood pressure control.
Ingredients
Active ingredients: Amlodipine 10mg, Valsartan 160mg, and Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg. Inactive ingredients typically include microcrystalline cellulose, crospovidone, and magnesium stearate, though this may vary by batch.
Dosage Form
Supplied as an oral tablet, packaged as 2 strips of 14 tablets (28 tablets total), supporting roughly a four-week course at standard once-daily dosing.
Uses
Used for high blood pressure management requiring three-way combination therapy with a milder diuretic dose. Amlodipine and valsartan address vessel relaxation and hormone blockade, while the lower hydrochlorothiazide dose provides mild additional fluid reduction with a gentler impact on electrolytes. This particular combination balances strong amlodipine and valsartan dosing with a gentler diuretic component, often chosen for patients who experienced electrolyte changes on higher hydrochlorothiazide doses but still need thorough blood pressure control.
How to use
Take one tablet by mouth once daily, at a consistent time, with or without food. Swallow whole with water. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless near the time of your next dose, in which case skip the missed one.
Side Effects
Common side effects include dizziness, mild increased urination, fatigue, and ankle swelling. Electrolyte changes are possible but generally less pronounced than with the higher 25mg hydrochlorothiazide combination. Facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or severe dizziness require immediate medical attention. Blood tests to monitor potassium and kidney function are still generally recommended, though changes tend to be milder at this lower diuretic strength compared with the 25mg hydrochlorothiazide combinations.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, and generally avoided during breastfeeding. Speak with your doctor about safer alternatives if pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
