Description
Description
Sofvasc 10mg is a higher-strength, once-daily blood pressure medicine containing amlodipine besylate, a calcium channel blocker. It is prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain forms of angina, generally once a patient’s blood pressure hasn’t been adequately controlled on the lower 5mg dose, or when a doctor determines a stronger starting dose is appropriate. By relaxing and widening blood vessels, amlodipine allows blood to flow more freely, reducing pressure within the arteries and easing the workload on the heart. As with all blood pressure medications, the goal is long-term, consistent daily use rather than occasional or as-needed dosing.
Ingredients
Each tablet contains Amlodipine Besylate equivalent to 10mg of amlodipine as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients typically include microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate. Formulation details can vary slightly between manufacturing batches, so patients with known excipient allergies should review the printed leaflet or consult their pharmacist.
Dosage Form
Sofvasc 10mg is supplied as an oral tablet in blister strip packaging. Each pack contains 30 tablets, arranged as 2 strips of 15 tablets, supporting a full month of once-daily treatment.
Uses
This medicine is used for the ongoing management of high blood pressure and chronic stable or vasospastic angina. It is often prescribed after a patient has been established on a lower dose and requires stronger blood pressure control, or in patients whose doctor determines a higher starting dose is clinically appropriate. It is a preventive, long-term treatment and is not intended to relieve a sudden angina episode as it occurs. This strength is also sometimes used in patients with more resistant hypertension who need a stronger single-agent dose before a doctor considers adding a second blood pressure medicine. Regular follow-up appointments help your doctor track how well your blood pressure is responding and catch any side effects early.
How to use
Take one tablet by mouth once daily, ideally at the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow whole with water rather than crushing or chewing. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it is nearly time for the next dose, in which case skip the missed dose. Never double up to make up for a missed dose. Do not discontinue this medicine abruptly without medical guidance, even if your blood pressure readings appear normal.
Side Effects
At this higher strength, side effects such as ankle or foot swelling, flushing, headache, and dizziness may be somewhat more noticeable than at the 5mg dose. Fatigue and palpitations can also occur, particularly in the first few weeks of treatment. Rare but serious effects include a significant drop in blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, or signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing, which require immediate medical attention. Report persistent or bothersome side effects to your doctor rather than adjusting the dose yourself. Because this is a higher dose, your doctor may want to see you for a follow-up visit a few weeks after starting to confirm the medicine is well tolerated. Report any new or worsening symptoms, particularly swelling, unusual fatigue, or heart palpitations, at your next appointment.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Amlodipine is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless a doctor determines the benefits outweigh potential risks, as safety data in pregnant women remains limited for this drug class. It is also generally discouraged during breastfeeding, since small amounts may pass into breast milk. Pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy? Speak with your doctor about safer alternatives before starting or continuing treatment.
