Uses

Dosage

One tablet daily at the same time for 28 days (24 active tablets followed by 4 inactive tablets), then start the next pack straight away.

How to Use

Swallow the tablet with water at about the same time each day, following the arrows on the pack. Start on day 1 of your period.

Missed Dose

If less than 12 hours late, take it now and continue. If more than 12 hours late, follow the leaflet and use condoms for 7 days.

Overdose

An overdose may cause nausea and vaginal bleeding. Contact a doctor.

When Not to Use

• History of blood clots, stroke or heart attack
• Migraine with aura
• Smokers over 35 years
• Uncontrolled high blood pressure
• Breast cancer or severe liver disease
• Pregnancy

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Nausea
• Breast tenderness
• Headache
• Spotting between periods
• Mood changes

Seek urgent help for leg pain or swelling, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, severe headache, vision or speech problems, or yellow skin.

Precautions & Warnings

• Vomiting or severe diarrhoea within 3–4 hours of a pill can stop it working
• Have regular blood pressure checks
• It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

Drug Interactions

• Rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St John’s wort and some HIV medicines: reduce effectiveness
• Lamotrigine: levels may fall
• ACE inhibitors, ARBs, spironolactone and potassium supplements: risk of high potassium
