The most common symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are tiredness, aching bones (especially the back, hips and legs), muscle weakness and cramps. Many people have no symptoms at all until the deficiency is severe. In children it can cause rickets, and in adults soft, painful bones (osteomalacia). The only way to know is a blood test (25-hydroxy vitamin D). A level of 20 ng/mL or above is adequate for most people.
Key points
| Symptom | Why it happens |
|---|---|
| Bone pain, especially lower back, hips, legs | Without vitamin D, the body can’t absorb enough calcium, and bones soften |
| Muscle weakness, aches or cramps | Low vitamin D and calcium affect muscle function |
| Tiredness and low energy | Commonly reported, though many other causes exist |
| Difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from a chair | A sign of more severe muscle weakness |
| In children: bowed legs, delayed walking, poor growth, painful bones | Rickets |
Hair loss, low mood and frequent infections are often blamed on low vitamin D. Studies show links, but they haven’t proven that vitamin D causes or cures them. Check other causes such as iron deficiency or thyroid problems with your doctor too.
| 25-hydroxy vitamin D level | What it means |
|---|---|
| Below 12 ng/mL (30 nmol/L) | Deficient; may weaken bones |
| 12–20 ng/mL | Inadequate for some people |
| 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) or above | Adequate for most people |
| Above 50 ng/mL (125 nmol/L) | Too high; may cause problems |
Some labs use slightly different cut-offs, so read your result against your lab’s range and discuss it with your doctor.

Daily or weekly 5,000 IU, or a 200,000 IU stat dose? These are different doses for different situations. Your doctor chooses based on your blood level. Don’t combine a stat dose with high-strength daily capsules unless you’ve been told to. A 200,000 IU capsule taken by mouth works for most people; an injection isn’t usually more effective, just more painful.
| Age | Recommended daily amount | Upper limit per day |
|---|---|---|
| 0–12 months | 400 IU | 1,000–1,500 IU |
| 1–18 years | 600 IU | 2,500–4,000 IU (by age) |
| 19–70 years, pregnancy, breastfeeding | 600 IU | 4,000 IU |
| Over 70 | 800 IU | 4,000 IU |
Doctors often prescribe more than these amounts for a short time to correct a deficiency. That’s fine under supervision. The risk comes from long-term high doses taken without testing.
Very high vitamin D raises blood calcium, causing nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, confusion, excessive thirst and urination, and kidney stones. It almost always comes from supplements, not sunlight. If you’ve been taking stat doses repeatedly, ask for a calcium and vitamin D test.

Vitamin D ki kami ki alamat mein thakawat, haddiyon mein dard (khaas tor par kamar aur tangon mein), pathon ki kamzori aur cramps shamil hain. Pakistan mein dhoop ke bawajood yeh kami aam hai, kyunke log ghar ke andar rehte hain aur jism dhaka hota hai. 200,000 IU ka capsule ya injection ilaaj ki khurak hai, baar baar baghair test ke na lein.
Tiredness, aching bones and muscle weakness are the most common early signs, but many people have none. A blood test is the only reliable way to know.
With treatment prescribed by a doctor, blood levels usually improve within about 2 to 3 months. Bone and muscle symptoms can take longer to settle.
As a single prescribed treatment dose, yes, for most adults. Repeating it often without checking your blood level can lead to vitamin D toxicity.
Low vitamin D has been linked to some types of hair loss, but it isn’t proven to be the cause. Iron deficiency, thyroid problems and stress are common causes to check too.
With your largest meal of the day that contains some fat, as this helps absorption. The time of day matters less than taking it consistently.
Possibly, with regular short sun exposure on bare skin. In practice, indoor living, covered clothing and smog mean many people still need a supplement.
