Description

Description

Sofvasc 5mg is a once-daily blood pressure medicine containing amlodipine besylate, belonging to a class of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It is prescribed to manage high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain types of chest pain (angina) caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. By relaxing and widening blood vessels, Sofvasc allows blood to circulate more easily, which lowers the pressure inside the arteries and reduces the amount of work the heart has to do with every beat. This particular strength, 5mg, is commonly used as a starting dose for patients beginning treatment for hypertension, and your doctor may adjust it over time depending on how your blood pressure responds.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains Amlodipine Besylate equivalent to 5mg of amlodipine as the active ingredient. Inactive ingredients typically include microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate, sodium starch glycolate, and magnesium stearate, which help bind the tablet and allow it to be manufactured consistently. Exact excipients can vary by batch, so patients with specific allergies should check the printed leaflet inside the pack or ask their pharmacist directly.

Dosage Form

Sofvasc 5mg is supplied as an oral tablet, packaged in blister strips. Each pack typically contains 30 tablets, organized as 2 strips of 15 tablets each, making it easy to track daily doses across a full month of treatment.

Uses

This medicine is used primarily for the long-term management of high blood pressure, either on its own or alongside other blood pressure medicines. It is also used to treat chronic stable angina and vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina, both of which involve chest discomfort related to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. Sofvasc does not relieve a sudden angina attack that is already happening; it works as a preventive, long-term treatment rather than an emergency one. Because high blood pressure often causes no symptoms at all, many patients only discover it during a routine checkup. Consistent use of Sofvasc, alongside regular blood pressure monitoring, helps reduce the long-term risk of complications such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney damage that untreated high blood pressure can cause over time.

How to use

Take one tablet by mouth once daily, at roughly the same time each day, with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water; do not crush or chew it unless your doctor specifically advises otherwise. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose, in which case skip the missed one rather than doubling up. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without speaking to your doctor, even if you feel your blood pressure has improved.

Side Effects

Common side effects include swelling in the ankles or feet (a known effect of this drug class), flushing, headache, dizziness, and fatigue, particularly when starting treatment or increasing the dose. Less commonly, some patients experience palpitations, nausea, or abdominal discomfort. Serious but rare reactions can include a significant drop in blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, or an allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat, any of which require immediate medical attention. If side effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor rather than stopping the medicine on your own. Most side effects are dose-related and tend to ease as your body adjusts over the first few weeks of treatment. If ankle swelling becomes bothersome, your doctor may suggest elevating your legs periodically or, in some cases, adjusting your dose rather than stopping the medicine altogether, since abrupt discontinuation is not recommended.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Amlodipine is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor determines the benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks, since blood pressure medicines in this class have not been extensively studied for safety in pregnant women. It is also not typically recommended while breastfeeding, as it may pass into breast milk in small amounts. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, discuss safer alternatives with your doctor before starting or continuing this medicine.

Storage Instructions

Store Sofvasc tablets at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the blister strip inside its original outer packaging until you are ready to use each tablet, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use tablets beyond their printed expiry date, and do not store this medicine in a bathroom cabinet where humidity is typically higher.

Disclaimer

Always use this medicine strictly according to your doctor’s instructions and prescribed dosage.
