Uses

Apixaget 5mg is used for:

• Reducing the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation not caused by valve disease
• Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and reducing the risk of them coming back
• Reducing the risk of blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery

Dosage

For atrial fibrillation, the usual dose is 5 mg twice daily; 2.5 mg twice daily is used for some older or lighter people or those with kidney problems. For DVT/PE, treatment starts at 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, then 5 mg twice daily. After hip or knee replacement, 2.5 mg twice daily is used for 10–35 days.

How to Use

Swallow the tablet with water, twice a day about 12 hours apart, with or without food. If you cannot swallow it, it can be crushed and mixed with water or apple juice.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember the same day, then continue twice daily as normal. Do not take two doses to make up.

Overdose

An overdose increases the risk of bleeding. Seek emergency medical help immediately.

When Not to Use

• Active significant bleeding
• Liver disease with bleeding risk
• Artificial heart valves
• Taking another anticoagulant at the same time (except when switching)
• Allergy to apixaban
